I overlooked the fact that the compiler is also part of the $CC variable.
Correct usage:

aseema at en4078926linux:~/myyocto/fsl-community-bsp/build/tmp/sysroots/wandboard-dual/home/xuser$
./a.out
bash: ./a.out: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
