My setup is:

/OE/tentacle/oebb.sh -> DL_DIR /OE/downloads (debian)
~/Angstrom/oebb.sh -> DL_DIR ~/Angstrom/sources/downloads (fedora)

Both don't seem to suffer from the defconfig problem yet.
