They are substituted in the u-boot shell (when it boots). Use printenv on the 
u-boot prompt to show them all.

I really don't have the faintest clue.

Try writing a small recipe that tries to source a script, see what happens. If 
you find what the problem is, I'll be happy to learn from it.
