I was curious about "use" also, aren't those just wrapper bitstreams? Do they
actually implement any logic ???

Once in the past I saw a situation where not having the kernel modules on the
rootfs would prevent the audio from working. It depends on how it is
configured in the kernel, as either compiled in the kernel or a kernel module
to whether the audio will work or not, out of the build/box. If that is the
case where audio is not working you might try to untar the modules tarball
from your images directory, into the root of your rootfs partition.
