maybe I should elaborate a bit more here:

In the bad case (I don't call "usb start" in u-boot) only the root hub 
is being detected:

lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

In the good case (I call "usb start" in u-boot) also my USB stick is 
being detected:

lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0951:1643 Kingston Technology DataTraveler G3
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
