I have read that I need to include "xen" in the DISTRO_FEATURES variable, is this necessary at all? If it is, where can I add this to my project?

Yes xen is a distro feature, which enables kernel configuration depending on this feature. See meta-virtualization and meta-xilinx kernel recipes
