Yes, that's what I do currently to get the board to boot properly.

To get a bit acceptable boot time I put the boot.bin into the dual QSPI flash 
(just write boot.bin to the start of the MTD device) and then continue booting 
from a openembedded built SD card.

Booting works somewhat okay with the 4.6 kernel and without pmufw. Other 
combinations thus far have failed (e.g. loading pmufw breaks the SD card on 
4.6, and 4.9 kernel I cannot get to compile yet).
