[meta-xilinx] Confusion about branches/releases

Dear list,
I hope someone can help me clear up some confusion about the meta-xilinx
release or branch structure.
AFAIK there are branches for each yocto project release
krogoth/morty/pyro which you are supposed to track when working with
that release.
There are also branches (at least here:
https://github.com/Xilinx/meta-xilinx) which are named after Xilinx
releases: rel-v2017.3, ...
These seem to be quite diverging from all other branches, i.e. for
rel-v2017.3 github tells me: "This branch is 136 commits ahead, 148
commits behind master."
Until now we have been using rel-v2016.4 with yocto krogoth, wanting to
update to pyro I'm quite confused what branch to track now.
