I would recommend against forking meta-xilinx and patching it, as the
main feature of Yocto/OE is layers of which their purpose is to
append/override/modify configuration for your project.

If you didn't patch the kernel to add your "zynq7-zc702-custom.dtb"
then it wont exist and you wont be able to build it via
KERNEL_DEVICETREE. There are a number of threads on this mailing list
where people have discussed adding custom dts/dtb to their build. Here
