[Toaster] toaster/master submitted for upstream

Hello,

Since M4 cut-off is looming in, Paul and I decided to submit current
toaster/master for integration upstream, and make sure that most of the
changes will make it in before the cut-off.

All new work will be merged as bug-fixes :). This doesn't actually have any
impact on the current work plan, we're just trying to spread the upstream
integration over multiple steps instead of dumping huge chunks of code in a
single go on the upstream.
