No, there is no way of doing this right now. You would need to use the
import layer functionality, i.e import the layer under a different name
and with the revision you want to use.

We do have a feature request open to provide a way to override the default
layer versions, which are determined by the project release:

I just added and removed some layers, then changed releases, and the layer
switch between versions seems to work for me. Am I misunderstanding what
you did?
