In fact the email has put the strange spaces and so on in between the text apparently ... I have redone the yocto-bsp create and now it seems to work.

Nah, yocto-bsp doesn't output things like what you have in your version e.g. priority 25, missing spaces after the PATTERN variable, and yes, the extra spaces in the middle of variables.  Somehow those things got into your version, randomly or otherwise.  Here's what I get using the
above:

$ yocto-bsp create test-test1 arm

# We have a conf and classes directory, add to BBPATH                                                                                
BBPATH := "${BBPATH}:${LAYERDIR}"

# We have a recipes directory, add to BBFILES                                                                                        
BBFILES := "${BBFILES} ${LAYERDIR}/recipes-*/*/*.bb \
